Year of Automation

I’ve been thinking about my goal setting and planning for the next quarter and year. I’ve also been thinking about my yearly theme.

The yearly theme comes from CGP Grey and Myke Hurley on the Cortex podcast, and I’ve always loved the idea. I’ve not quite been successful in it or, in fact, my quarterly or annual planning before. So what do my goals tie into this year?

That’s when it hit me, automation.

I’ve written quite a bit about automation in the context of my broad definitions.

I write more about it than implement it at this stage. But it works for everything I want to do as it’s not just about productivity. My financial, health and creative goals all fall under being benefitted from automation.

I consider habits and mental “tricks” to be a form of automation for self-motivation and getting down to doing things. Taking this into account, along with what I can review over the previous year, everything I’ve done well in or managed to pursue is when I’ve been able to add in some form of an automation system.

Success so far includes the habit engine I developed to go through my mornings, including the daily essay writing I’m doing now. It’s a habit I’m compelled to do, so it’s analogous to the autonomic nervous system actions, which is biological automation.

So this year, my theme will be the year of automation. Although it may be something I’m inclined to do anyway, that’s a point of it, only now it is clarified, and I can lean into it and push it with purpose.

So it is about planning my goals, but they come under the framework of building automation.
