Organising In Obsidian with Tags

Backlinks are the backbone of organising in Obsidian and they can go deeper than just links between note files.

But backlinks are not the only organisation methods in Obsidian.

You can also use tagging to produce an easy referenceable collection for any notes that use that tag. Tags are created in the same way as in many other places by using the hash symbol, #. To make sure it’s a tag all you need to do is ensure that the following text from the hash has no spaces.

You can see your notes that use a specific tag by clicking on an example of that tag or using it in the search bar with prepend of “tag:”.

While this won’t show relationships it will give you another way to categorise notes beyond a rigid folder structure since you can have multiple tags in a note. You can also use the tag pane plugin, which is a core plugin, to view and search tags.

You can also use tags in the YAML front matter by adding them in a list with the keyword tag.

YAML/Front matter is a method of adding metadata to the top of any note file.

The advantage is many plugins and also other apps and services can use that information, as well as being a convenient human readable place to have information about the note at the top.

You can also nest tags with the forward slash, /, to effectively create a folder structure of tags. These are called nested tags. This then gives you further flexibility on classifying notes at various granular levels.
